Elon Musk says bots creating ‘good content’ will be exempt from Twitter’s plan to charge for API access is used for.
Elon Musk has tweeted that it will offer a free, write-only API for bots “providing good content”. Elon Musk has said that “bots that provide good content for free” will be exempt from Twitter’s controversial proposal to charge API developers for access, after the proposal sparked a backlash.
Saying he was “responding to feedback,” Musk tweeted late Saturday: “Twitter will enable a lite, write-only API for bots providing good content. Twitter announced Thursday that it will block free access to its API starting February 9. Musk then said that previously free access had been “grossly abused” by “bot scammers and opinion manipulators.”
Just ~$100/month for API access with ID verification would clear up a lot. In light of the announcement, free API access will be blocked. The developer behind popular bot-building service Cheap Bots Done Quick, which currently supports around 54,000 Twitter accounts, previously announced that it is likely to shut down after February 9.
Responding to Musk’s latest comment, he wrote: “Or maybe not??? God, and who knows.” Neither Twitter nor Musk immediately responded to requests for comment from Insider. Accordingly, offers both free and paid packages for its API.
Premium packages cost between $149 and $2,499 per month, depending on the number of tweets requested by the developer. Some popular third-party services, such as Tweetbot and Twitterific, were already forced to shut down after Twitter blocked them from accessing its API in mid-January.
The proposed API fee follows Musk’s efforts to monetize the blue-check verification process by introducing Twitter Blue, which allowed users to purchase blue checkmarks for $8 per month.
